At Beaumont Day Care Inc. we use an emergent curriculum approach to facilitate interactions and build relationships; to arrange play areas in the room; and to plan learning experiences. Our curriculum reflects the children’s interests and developmental capabilities. These experiences cater to the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the whole child. This allows children the freedom of expression within the boundaries of respect, thus providing the opportunities for the child to have fun, feel supported, accepted, understood and respected.
We give children opportunities to develop positive interactions and relationships by providing games and toys that require more than one player and by teaching the children, through questions and comments, positive ways to solve problems between each other.
We provide a secure environment for play that encourages independence. This environment is arranged to meet the children’s developmental capabilities and to enhance their interests. The room arrangement is based on the children’s interests and needs. We discover this through observation and questions. During free play the children will develop their self-esteem, co-operation skills and sharing skills. We do this by creating cozy places for 2 or more children to play in and ensure enough toys are in each area to have choices. Toys are displayed on shelves at the child’s level and pictures are used to help children with the clean-up process.
Free play is an opportunity for the child to be in charge of what they do and when they do it. During this time an activity may be offered but it is the child’s choice whether or not they do it. The child also chooses what they play with and for how long within the allotted amount of free play time. BDC Inc. believes that play is one of the best ways for children to learn and grow.
Staff observe the children during play to find out about their interests and developmental capabilities then create a web based on these observations. The web identifies what the children are interested in and activities the staff will do with the children, both staff-guided and self-directed. The children’s learning and developmental growth is also conveyed to parents through happy-grams, documentation panels and impromptu conversations. Documentation panels are pictures displayed on our bulletin board identifying what the children are doing and skills they are practicing. We often provide spontaneous learning experiences during an observation within the moment of play.
At BDC, our staff strive to incorporate diversity into our everyday program. This can be observed in our centre with the activities we do, the special guests we invite and the books and pictures hanging about our centre.
